A tight waterproof digital camera is rapidly being a standard item inside the portfolio of equipment items owned and used by the amateur hobbyist photographer. They are now relatively inexpensive and widely versatile, rated suited to a variety of settings such as family pets party, landscapes, travel along with underwater-beach-snow. They can be used in the water with confidence down to a depth of ten meters. Their size is truly pocketable.
Most people who own a compact watertight unit recommend them and frequently claim they provide so much freedom outdoors which they would never return to using a standard, non-waterproof unit. There’s no need to treat these units carefully and respect; you don’t need to hide under an umbrella to snap pictures outdoors in the event it rains. They are built tough.
Some units are even shock and freeze-proof, making them robust equipment for true adventure expeditions. For why not a few hundred dollars, a photographer can find a brawny unit that will operate underwater as a result of 10 meters and also on the ski slopes as a result of minus 10 degrees centigrade. Most can survive being dropped from a height of one meter.
Of course, compact cameras are unlikely to capture as good an image as DSLRs (digital single-lens reflex camera). However, compact waterproof units should be expected, eventually, to take photos much like those of a standard digital compact. Buying expensive and bulky watertight housings has become something necessary only regarding high quality DSLRs.
Watertight compact cameras are already available commercially since 2002. The majority of the leading brands have launched a minumum of one model in this segment. Their functionality is impressive but still remains below that for sale in standard compacts. The current generation has higher resolution sensors, fast processors, wide-angle lenses, higher resolution and large LCD screens along with built-in image stabilization. Their image quality is extremely high. But they do nevertheless have their limitations.
However, as this segment is still relatively young, the functionality available on watertight units will not match the sophistication of ordinary compacts. For instance, fast shutter speeds, continuous shooting, higher definition video and large range zoom lenses remain not widely present on most models in this class. Just a few models currently possess these functionalities.
Watertight units are fitted with internal zoom (rather than extending) lenses to prevent water, dust as well as other foreign material from entering the key body. As in the case of waterproof timepieces (watches), watertight cameras need to have their seal checked regularly, every 12 months or so, to make sure it stays watertight. Units which are used frequently (weekly or more) in water will more than likely need to have its seal replaced annually.
To sum up, compact waterproof cameras for now remain something of your specialist tool. They may be seen as a useful item but something to be bought in addition to, rather than instead of, a standard compact camera. However, they will soon become the new standard. As their zoom range increases, resolution improves and overall functionality expands, these units will be the only compact camera owned by hobbyist photographers.
