In the past, the main surveillance systems seemed to be CCTV, that broadcast its signal in analog format. The signals did not reach that far, and the pictures would have to be recorded, and then watched at a later date on a video recorder. This was not only a pain, but pictures were not in real time. This system was fine as long as you were in the house, however, how about when you are away?
Thanks to the internet, which has bought many new and exciting technologies into the home, web cams are now able to record movements in your home and send them, via the internet, for you to watch, in real time. This enables you to monitor your home 24 hours a day, seven days a week from wherever you are in the world as long as you have an internet connection.
You also have the option of installing cameras in various rooms and nowadays, more and more companies are using digital surveillance cameras to reduce both vandalism and theft.
There are a wide range of surveillance packages around or you can build your own system relatively easily. Cameras should be discreet and blend in with the surroundings and be sure not to scrimp on cost as the clearer the pictures the better.
If you are building your own surveillance system, then there is a variety of software available, that can alert you by email, text or phone when an intruder enters your property, which is very helpful if you are out of the house for a long time and unable to access the internet.
Nowadays images are much more defined than the old analog videos, and unlike when recording onto video tape, recording pictures in a digital format will retain its quality however many times it is played back. The digital files are also compressed and saved much easier than a stack of video tapes.
There are many advantages to digital surveillance systems and these days systems are relatively inexpensive and simple to install and operate.
